What is single trip travel insurance?

Single-trip travel insurance is also known as short stay travel insurance or one-trip travel insurance. It covers you for one holiday to multiple destinations and up to 104 days per trip, depending on your age. This means you can dip your toes in multiple time zones during your journey. It’s a great option if you don’t travel more than twice per year.

Is single-trip holiday insurance right for my trip?

The right travel insurance depends on the kind of trip you’re taking. For one holiday, single-trip travel insurance might be all you need. However, if you plan on travelling frequently or for longer periods, our annual multi-trip and long-stay policies might be worth exploring.

Single-trip travel insurance

If you love travelling only once a year and not for longer than three months at a time, then single-trip holiday insurance is probably your best bet. It usually costs less than annual multi-trip or long stay cover, because you are only paying for what you need.

With Staysure, you’re covered as soon as you buy your policy, so it would be ideal to buy travel insurance right after booking your trip. Depending on your age, you might be able to buy your single-trip policy up to 18 months before your travel.

Annual multi-trip travel insurance

If you travel more than twice a year, our annual multi-trip cover may offer the best value for money. It will keep you covered for up to 183 days over a set 12-month period.

This policy covers all of your yearly trips, allowing you to save time by skipping the admin of buying separate policies each time you travel.

The best part is that you are not tied to set dates. Should you change your plans or want to go on an extra holiday throughout the year, you’ll still be covered.

Long-stay travel insurance

Want to take your time exploring the world? With Staysure’s long-stay travel insurance, you can travel for up to 18 months, depending on your age.

This is a perfect option if you want to go on a sabbatical, go backpacking, or take a gap year.

Like our single-trip travel insurance, you’ll be covered for a round trip to one or more destinations, but for a longer time period.

Why choose Staysure?

What does single-trip travel insurance cover?

If you want your yearly holiday to go without a hitch, then you need to make sure you're covered for all the things that matter most.

What’s covered?

  • emergency medical treatment abroad – including hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you fall seriously ill or are injured while away.

  • getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too unwell to travel as planned, including specialist medical transport if needed.

  • cancellations due to illness or injury – including if you're too unwell to travel, or experience a bereavement.

  • cutting your trip short – cover if something serious happens mid-holiday and you need to return early.

  • lost, stolen or damaged belongings – including your baggage, passport and personal money.

  • pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told us about them and we’ve accepted them, they can be included in your policy.

Example: You’re hiking at an altitude of 1000 metres in Italy when your foot catches a rock. Gravity has its way with you, and you roll downhill. Unfortunately, you break your leg mid-fall. We cover your transport to a nearby hospital, and we foot your medical bill. If necessary, we will also arrange safe repatriation back home after your hospital stay.

What isn’t covered?

  • cancelling because you’ve changed your mind – cover only applies to unexpected and insured reasons.

  • missed flights – unless it’s due to a strike**, severe weather, or mechanical breakdowns.

  • undeclared medical conditions – always let us know about any health issues when you get a quote.

  • unattended items – valuables left alone may not be covered.

  • activities not listed on your policy – like extreme or cruises, unless you’ve added them.

  • travelling against advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – policies won’t cover destinations where the UK government advises against all travel.

  • incidents involving alcohol or drugs – claims related to excessive alcohol or controlled substances won’t be accepted.

  • going against medical advice – for example, flying too soon after an operation or illness.

  • trips taken for business or work – your policy is for leisure trips only.

  • travelling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment – including consultations, tests, or planned procedures abroad.

Example: You are having a ball during your trip to Ibiza and may have had too much to drink when you accidentally slip and fall on the dancefloor. Because Staysure doesn’t cover claims caused by excessive alcohol use, we won’t be able to cover your medical expenses.

How long can I travel for with single-trip insurance?

How long you can travel while being covered by our single-trip travel insurance depends on your age and all the regions you’ll be visiting.

For example, if you’re turning 65 and exploring Europe, our policy can cover you for up to 550 days. If you are 80+ years young and travelling to the USA, we can cover you for up to 104 days. It’s best to purchase your travel insurance just after finalising your holiday booking, to make sure you are covered well ahead of time.

How to buy single-trip travel insurance

Buying single-trip travel insurance has never been easier. Simply give us a call or get a quick online quote to start the process.

    1. Tell us where you want to go

To get started on your quote, we’ll go over your travel plans. We need to know who’s coming along, where you’re heading, how long your trip will be, and whether you need insurance for a single trip or annual multi-trip cover.

Top tip: for cruises, it’s important to include every destination on your itinerary, as well as any flights to and from your port.

    2. Share your medical history with us

Next on the list, we’ll go over some health questions with you so we can make sure you get the best medical cover while travelling. Now is the time to tell us about any health concerns that needed medication, medical advice, or treatment during the last two years.

We also ask about any past heart or circulation conditions – even if they weren’t recent.

    3. Get a tailored quote

Once we have everything we need, we’ll give you your personalised quote, either online or by reading it out loud over the phone.

You’ll be able to choose your level of cover and add any optional extras that suit your trip, such as cruise travel insurance or winter sports cover. If you’d like more time to think it over, we can also send your quote by email so you can go through it in your own time.

When to buy single-trip travel insurance

Many experts agree that buying travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday is the best way to go. Martin Lewis calls this ASAB, or Buy As Soon As you Book. By doing this, you’ll be covered during the run-up to your holiday and while you’re abroad.

Travel insurance can’t be backdated, so it’s best to get it locked in before you are on holiday. If you still have to get your policy in place for future travels, it’s not too late. Simply get in touch with our friendly team to get a quote.

How much is single-trip travel insurance?

Single-trip insurance, like all of our policies, is priced around you, your needs, and your trip. Yes, your holiday destination will influence the price, but so will your age, your pre-existing medical conditions, how long you plan on travelling, and if you want to insure specific things, like flights and accommodation.

If you’re only going on holiday once every 12 months, single-trip travel insurance can offer real value because you are only paying for what you need. However, if there’s a possibility of travelling two or more times during this year, then it might be worth comparing quotes on both our single-trip and annual-trip travel insurance policies.

How to get cheaper single-trip travel insurance

Want to shrink the costs of your travel insurance while still getting the most out of your policy?

Keep these tips and tricks in mind before you buy:

    • get covered early – if you buy your cover as soon as you book your trip, you will have all the protection you need should you need to cancel because of a policy-approved reason.

    • go for a higher excess – one of the best ways to lower your premium is to increase your excess. Just be sure to settle on an excess you are comfortable paying should you need to.

    • consider another policy – if you are going to travel more than twice per year, an annual multi-trip policy might be cheaper than multiple single-trip policies.

    • leave the add-ons – only get add-ons, like cruise or gadget cover, that you need.

    • be honest about your health – when you declare your full medical history, we have everything we need to tailor your cover, so you are protected when you need it most.

    • get group cover – our group travel insurance lets you save on costs by covering everyone under one policy.

    • travel light – lower your premium by reducing the baggage limit on your policy.

    • find a discount – make sure you drop by our discounts page before buying so you can save on your policy.
